Maths Craft NZ is very excited to be part of the grand opening event of the LEGO® Bricks of Olympus exhibition at the Teece Museum from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2026. We have some incredible volunteers available to help you get hands-on with four wonderful craft stations.
Fractals
A Menger Sponge constructed with cards and cladding.
Fractals are mathematical objects built from repeated copies of themselves. Have a go at making a Menger Sponge yourself!
Meanders
An example of a (not quite complete!) meander drawn on a grid.
A meander is a repeated pattern or motif, usually constructed from a continuous line. Meanders are common decorative elements in ancient Greek and Roman art. Try drawing some for yourself!
The Four Colour Theorem
Several examples of 6 x 6 colourings using LEGO® bricks.
The Four Colour Theorem says that using no more than four colours, every map (or drawing) can be coloured so that that regions sharing a common boundary do not have the same colour. Explore this theorem with the LEGO® challenge at our station.
Tilings
A Penrose tiling made from two different rhomboids. Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
A tiling is a pattern made from shapes called tiles which fit together without any gaps or overlaps. Come along on the day to try three remarkable tilings which can make patterns which never repeat no matter how big the tiling grows! Amazingly, one of these tilings can be made with just one shape of tile.
