Maths Craft is at the Festival of Women and Girls in Science on Level 1 of Tūranga in central Christchurch from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Come and join us in getting hands-on with three fascinating crafts!
Fractals
A Menger Sponge constructed with cards and cladding.
Fractals are mathematical objects built from repeated copies of themselves. Have a go at making a Menger Sponge yourself!
Origami
A small triakis icosahedron constructed with sonobe units.
Modular origami is made from simple units which are connected together to form a more complicated structure. Each unit is folded from a single piece of paper. Explore this interesting concept by making sonobe units (a nice unit to start with), and putting them together.
Tilings

A tiling is a pattern made from shapes called tiles which fit together without any gaps or overlaps. Come along on the day to try a remarkable tiling which can make patterns which never repeat no matter how big the tiling grows! Amazingly, the tiling that we have for you can be made with just one shape of tile.
